AR glasses are finally here...

AR SNAP SPECTACLE SPECS WMF2026

... and this changes the outlook for those who design digital experiences!

world

On 16 September 2026, in Los Angeles, SPECS Launch marked a significant milestone for the immersive technology sector. With the official unveiling of the new SPECS AR glasses, Evan Spiegel e Snap presented a concrete vision of how augmented reality can become part of everyday life, without the need for bulky headsets or experiences that isolate the user from the real world.

For us at Melazeta, this is not just another new device on the market. It confirms a direction we have been observing and investing in for some time.

In recent years, we have worked directly with the Snap Spectacles Developer Edition, developing and testing interactive Lenses, gaming experiences and innovative ways to engage audiences. This is why we view AR Glasses not as a futuristic promise, but as a technology that is beginning to become genuinely usable in cultural, tourism, educational and event contexts.

Why AR Glasses convince us more than other immersive technologies
In recent years, mixed reality has made huge strides. Headsets from Meta and other manufacturers have demonstrated just how natural it has become to interact with digital content through hand movements, spatial recognition and body tracking. So-called hand tracking is probably one of the most interesting innovations introduced to the sector in recent years.

Yet, whenever we analyse an experience from the end-user’s perspective, we keep coming to the same conclusion: simplicity matters.

AR Glasses have a feature that makes them particularly interesting. They are worn just like a normal pair of glasses. They do not require controllers. They do not separate people from their surroundings. They can be used during a cultural visit, a stroll through a historic village, an educational activity or an event without radically altering the user’s behaviour.

It is a difference that may seem subtle but which, in the design of experiences, is enormous.

The new sixth-generation SPECS aim precisely to fill this niche: more comprehensive than smart glasses and much lighter and more intuitive than traditional mixed reality headsets. Weighing around 132 grams, with transparent AR display, advanced hand tracking, integration with AI services and standalone operation, they represent one of the most mature offerings currently available in the sector.

In Bologna, we gave over 350 people the chance to try out this technology
That is why we decided to bring the Snap Spectacles Developer Edition to the WMF in Bologna.

During the June 2026 event, we set up a desk entirely dedicated to trying out the augmented reality lenses developed on the Snap platform.

During the event, over 350 people put on the glasses and tried out various experiences, including gaming Lenses developed by our team and other Lenses available within the Snap ecosystem.

For us, it was above all an opportunity to observe. Rather than the technical specifications, we were interested in understanding how people reacted.

The response was very clear. Within a few seconds, users understood how to interact with the interface. Hand tracking was intuitive. Attention wasn’t focused on the device, but on the content and activities on offer.

This is an aspect that is often underestimated when discussing immersive technology. A platform isn’t successful simply because it’s technologically advanced. It’s successful when people can use it effortlessly.

And have fun.

And that is exactly what we observed during WMF2026.

They aren’t perfect, but they’re sufficiently evolved
Of course, AR glasses haven’t yet overcome all the technological challenges.

Even the current SPECS have obvious limitations. The field of view is still relatively narrow compared to what we envisage for the future. Battery life could be improved. The app catalogue is set to grow in the coming years.

However, these limitations do not alter the overall assessment.

For the first time, we are seeing devices that are light enough, intuitive enough and reliable enough to be used outside of laboratories and tech demos.

This is a fundamental difference.

Many immersive technologies of the past were impressive to watch for ten minutes. AR glasses, on the other hand, are starting to become interesting for prolonged use.

The convergence of AR, AI and gamification
From Melazeta’s perspective, the real opportunity lies not just in the hardware. We have also tested other AR glasses, such as the Xreal and Viture, as well as the Spectacles, to gain as comprehensive an overview as possible.

The most interesting aspect concerns what it will be possible to build on top of this new generation of devices.

We have been working in the world of game design, gamification and interactive experiences for years. Today, we are seeing an increasingly tangible convergence between augmented reality, artificial intelligence and personalised contents.

We imagine cultural itineraries that adapt to the visitor’s interests.

Tourist experiences that change in real time based on the choices made along the way.

Virtual characters capable of guiding and engaging people during a visit.

Playful activities that unfold directly within the physical space, transforming places, businesses, trade fairs, events and regions into interactive environments.

We’re not talking about theoretical scenarios. Many of the necessary technologies already exist today. We’ve been using Augmented Reality in its various forms for years. What was missing was a platform simple and intuitive enough to make them accessible to a wider audience.

A direction we continue to follow closely
For over twenty-five years, Melazeta has been working at the intersection of technology, play and public engagement.

That is why we continue to closely monitor the evolution of AR glasses and to explore their potential through the development of lenses, prototypes and real-world experiences, offering this as an innovative service.

The launch of the new SPECS does not mark the end of the journey. However, it does represent a very important milestone: wearable augmented reality is becoming increasingly tangible, accessible and useful.

And for those of us who design experiences capable of connecting people, content and places, this is extremely exciting news.
